Main entrance
Right at the start of the tour you'll see the Container-Store.  This is the main entrance where you'll get the tickets and buy water, snacks and souvenirs.  It's pretty common to hear monkeys howling pretty close to the trail.

Main trail
It's a short trail that will get you to the Visitor's Center and Calamito Lake lookout.  The trail itself will show you a variety of birds you can spot singing next to you.

The trail is well maintained and in good conditions for walking.  There are signs and information along the way.

Visitor's Center
Hummingbirds feeding and buzzing all around you. These noisy, tiny and territorial birds will defend their feeders against other hummingbirds claiming for a space.

You can spend hours watching them face to face while having tea or coffee.  There wooden chairs for you to take a short break and restrooms to freshen up.

Observation Tower
You'll see the base of the tower and the top of the tower which is 32 meters high above the canopy of the rainforest.

The experience starts right at the base, surrounded by nature and while you climb up, you can notice the different sounds, smells, sights and finally reach the top. There are resting platforms every 8m.

Calamito Lake
Noisy, humid, active. Our lookout has a deck where you can sit and watch aquatic birds feeding and flying all over the place. The deck is in the shade of trees so you can spend a couple of hours birdwatching.

Birdwatchers' favourite!

This is where

your next adventure begins

Enjoy Nature

Discover the great variety of birds surrounding our center next to Pipeline Road in Gamboa. Walk on our trails and relax watching the hummingbirds in our Visitor Center at the borders of Soberanía National Park, just at a 40 minutes drive by car from Panama City.
The Panama Rainforest Discovery Center is an ecotourism and environmental education project under the administration of Eugene Eisenmann Avifauna Foundation, which main goal is the conservation of birds through environmental sustainability projects.
  • Who's there?

The Tamandua Mexicana is a medium-sized anteater with a prehensile tail living on tropical and subtropical forests from southern Mexico through Central America and to the edge of nothern Andes.

  • You'll make me blush!

Crested owls' behaviour is strictly nocturnal feeding on large insects and small vertebrates like bats.
  • First row seats

Soberanía National Park runs along the banks of the Panama Canal covering 220 square kilometers.
The Pipeline Road is a birdwatchers' favourite as it passes through old-growth and secodary forests, home to 525 bird species.
  • Dude, I'm high

Our 32m high tower brings you above the canopy making this the perfect spot to spend hours of birdwatching and taking pictures.
  • Do you need a guide?

Our trails and tower are open to all visitors. If you'd like to have a guided tour, contact us to plan ahead and give you the best experience.
  • Did you take it?

Gartered Trogon or Trogon Caligatus are spread from east-central Mexico all the way down to Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela.  Althought their flight is fast, they prefer to perch upright and motionless posing for your photos.

Our Facilities

Designed and built with sustainable architecture, using recycled materials and clean technologies.

Visitor Center

Solar panels and rainwater collectors allow this self-sustainable open structure of 140m2 to stand up in the middle of the jungle minimizing it's impact on the environment. This is the place where all the hiking trails start.

Built with 70% of recycled materials from the old Canal Zone constructions, the Visitor Center features a deck, cellar, and 2 restrooms. You can sit back and enjoy the variety of hummingbirds while sipping a free cup of coffee or hot tea.

Observation Tower

200m  from the Visitor Center, along a gravel path and wooden walkway, you will find our observation tower.

A spiral staircase of 174 steps brings you to the resting & observation platforms every 8m until you reach the top deck at 32m high, just above the forest canopy.

Forest Trails

With 1.1 km long and 1.2 m wide, our circuit of trails through the forest was built using fine gravel. The trails include a range from easy to moderate difficult levels, also you can find two resting locations:

One, by the edge of the Calamito Lake which has a small deck with benches great for observing water wildlife.
